Use Potassium chloride is used for hypokalemia of various origins, including conditions caused by vomiting, diarrhea, hyperaldosteronism, polyuria in chronic renal failure, and the use of certain medications. It is also used for arrhythmias, including digitalis intoxication, and for the hypokalemic form of paroxysmal myoplegia. It is indicated for hypokalemia due to diabetes mellitus, prolonged diarrhea and/or vomiting, therapy with hypotensive drugs, certain diuretics, and glucocorticosteroids. It is used for the treatment and prevention of digitalis intoxication, as well as for the prevention of arrhythmia in patients with acute myocardial infarction. How to take Potassium chloride is administered intravenously by jet injection, or if necessary, intravenously by slow drip (slowly, over 1 hour) at a dose of 2-2.5 g in 500 ml of a 5% dextrose solution. For the prevention and treatment of ectopic arrhythmias in myocardial infarction, a polarizing mixture is used: a potassium chloride solution in 5%-10% dextrose solution with the addition of insulin at a rate of 1 IU per 3-4 g of dry dextrose. Contraindications Contraindications to the use of Potassium chloride include hypersensitivity to potassium chloride, hyperkalemia or hyperchloremia of any etiology, complete AV or intraventricular block, renal failure with oliguria or azotemia, ventricular fibrillation, Addison's disease, hyperadrenalism associated with adrenogenital syndrome. It is also contraindicated in extensive tissue breakdown (including severe burns), acute dehydration, heat cramps, metabolic disorders (acidosis, hypovolemia with hyponatremia), gastrointestinal tract (GIT) diseases, pregnancy, and lactation.
