Timolol 0.5% eye drops are a clear, colorless solution. The active substance is timolol maleate in the amount of 6.8 mg per 1 ml, which corresponds to a timolol content of 5 mg. Timolol is a non-selective beta-adrenergic receptor blocker without sympathomimetic activity. When applied topically in ophthalmology, it lowers intraocular pressure, mainly by reducing the formation of aqueous humor and slightly increasing its outflow. The reduction in intraocular pressure occurs without significant influence on accommodation, refraction, and pupil size, which helps to avoid worsening visual acuity and quality of night vision. The drug's effect manifests 20 minutes after instillation, with a maximum effect achieved in 1-2 hours, and the duration of action is 24 hours. When applied topically, timolol quickly penetrates the cornea and enters the systemic circulation in a small amount due to absorption through the vessels of the conjunctiva, nasal mucous membranes, and tear ducts. Use The drug is used for the treatment of elevated intraocular pressure, chronic open-angle glaucoma, angle-closure glaucoma (as an additional agent in combination with miotics), secondary glaucoma (including uveal, aphakic, post-traumatic), and congenital glaucoma (when other therapeutic measures are ineffective). How to take Adults and children over 10 years of age should instill 1 drop of 0.25% solution into the conjunctival sac twice a day. If the efficacy is insufficient, the dose is increased to 1 drop of 0.5% solution twice a day. Upon normalization of intraocular pressure, the maintenance dose is 1 drop of 0.25% once a day.
