Use: Nifedipine is a calcium channel blocker, exerting antianginal and hypotensive effects. It reduces the tone of vascular smooth muscles, dilates coronary and peripheral arteries, decreases total peripheral vascular resistance (TPVR) and blood pressure (BP), and slightly reduces myocardial contractility, thereby reducing post-load and myocardial oxygen demand. The drug improves coronary blood flow. How to take: For the relief of hypertensive crisis or an angina attack, Nifedipine can be administered sublingually (under the tongue) at 10-20 mg (in rare cases up to 30 mg). In special cases, such as variant angina or severe arterial hypertension, the dose can be increased to 30 mg 3-4 times a day for a short period. Contraindications: Nifedipine is contraindicated during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Adequate and well-controlled studies of nifedipine safety during pregnancy have not been conducted, and its use during this period is not recommended. Since nifedipine is excreted in breast milk, its use during lactation should be avoided or breastfeeding should be discontinued during treatment. Experimental studies have revealed embryotoxic, fetotoxic, and teratogenic effects of nifedipine. The drug should be used with caution in patients with impaired liver and kidney function, as well as in elderly patients. In patients with impaired liver function, high doses of nifedipine should be avoided.
